A frequently asked question is "Is it art?" and much debate often follows. Well whether any of these book illustrations merit the title of art I cannot say but what I can say is that in order to get "Owd Three Laps" bottom-up pose correct it was necessary to recruit a life-model. Nothing is as easy as it looks!

SUTTON PARK

BESTREWN THOSE SPHERES OF POLISHED LEATHER
TUMBLED THERE BY AUTUMN'S WEATHER
PLAY-THINGS BECOME WITH WHICH TO LARK
FOR LADS WHOM PLAY IN SUTTON PARK

BUT COMES THE TIME FOR NATURE'S REST
WHEN SUTTON PARK IN WHITE IS DRESSED
FOR OVER ALL HOARFROST DOES CLING
UNTIL THE WARMING SUNS OF SPRING

ALONG HER SKIRTS THEN SILVERED STREAM
ENCHANTS THE LAD AND FILLS HIS DREAM
WITH STICKLEBACK AND MINNOW DARK
THAT SPEND THEIR LIVES IN SUTTON PARK

THEN LINDENS CAST PERFUME DIVINE
ON VELVET SWARD WHERE FAMILIES DINE
WHERE MAIDENS TO THEIR HEARTS DELIGHT
WEAVE ENDLESS CHAINS FROM DAISIES WHITE

AND INNOCENCE IN NATURE’S SUIT
OF BUTTERFLIES MAKE BLITHE PURSUIT
OR TO THEIR PLAYMATES CALL RESPOND
TO GAMBOL GUILELESS IN THE POND

THE CLICKING ORBS THE NODDING HEADS
THE DRONING BEE IN FLOWER BEDS
O SUTTON PARK YOU TIMELESS PLACE
RETAIN YOUR CHARM AND CONSTANT GRACE

Owd Three Laps
I prepared this image as the frontispiece for the book of the same name. It draws on the oft' reported account that Bill Sharp would frequently hide his head beneath his pillow to avoid the prying eyes of sightseers.
Willy Woggle?
Even the rabbit has its paws in its ears to block out Billy's mouth-organ playing. Comissioned for "Billy and the Preposterous Pachyderms" .
Innocence In Nature's Suit
The year 2012 was the centenary of the opening of the beautiful park in Sutton-In-Craven. This illustration accompanied the verse in celebration thereof.
Laiking In Sutton Beck
The year 2012 was the centenary of the opening of the beautiful park in Sutton-In-Craven. This second illustration also accompanied the celebratory verse.

WILL HE WOGGLE ?

OUR BILLY WERE A BOY SCOUT
HE LOVED TO GO A-SCOUTING
HE LOVED TO GO TO HUMPHREY HEAD
OR HEST-BANK FOR AN OUTING

HE LOVED TO TWIST A ROPE IN KNOTS
AND LIGHT A FIRE WI’ TWO STICKS
HE LOVED TO SLEEP BENEATH THE STARS
AND SPEND THE NIGHT IN HAY RICKS

HIS MA KNEW HE WERE VENTURESOME
ALWAYS WI’ SOME QUEST ON
BUT AS WITH MOTHERS DOWN THROUGH TIME
SHE’D FRET HE HAD A VEST ON

HE LOVED TO STAR IN T’JAMBOREE
BLOWING HIS MOUTH ORGAN
HE’D SUCK ‘N BLAW ‘N BLAW 'N SUCK
‘TIL TH’AUDIENCE HAD ALL GONE

HE LOVED TO LEARN THE SECRET CODES
AND WORDS WITH SPECIAL MEANING
LIKE ORIENTEER FOR EAST IS THEER
AND SANITISE FOR CLEANING

HIS MOTHER COULD MAKE NOUGHT OF THIS
HER MIND IT FAIR DID BOGGLE
SHE’D ANGUISH ‘BOUT HIM GROWING UP
AND WONDER WILL ‘E WOGGLE ?
